WHY UNDERSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON CHILD HEALTH MATTERS

Environmental conditions play a critical role in determining child health outcomes Children are especially vulnerable to pollution, unsafe water, poor sanitation, and climate-related challenges.

Air pollution is a leading concern, with many Indian cities recording dangerously high levels of particulate matter. This contributes to respiratory diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, and long-term lung damage in children. Indoor air pollution, mainly from biomass cooking fuels, also affects millions in rural areas.

Unsafe drinking water and inadequate sanitation lead to diarrheal diseases, a major cause of death in children under five. Contaminated environments also increase the risk of malnutrition by affecting nutrient absorption and overall immunity.

Climate change is worsening the situation by increasing the frequency of heatwaves, floods, and vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria.

To protect child health, India must strengthen policies on clean air, safe water, sanitation, and climate resilience. A healthy environment is essential for every child to survive, grow, and thrive.
